Dropcam Can’t Connect to Verizon FiOS Router

If you’re trying to set up Dropcam, and you have Verizon FiOS, you may be running into problems connecting it to your wi-fi.  You’re able to see the network SSID, but when you try to connect you get this error:

Wireless network not found. Please make sure the camera is within range of the router, MAC filtering is disabled, and the password is correct.

What you have to do is change your router’s security from WEP to WPA2.  If you know how to do that, great, go do it and enjoy your Dropcam.  If you don’t, here’s some steps.

  1. Log into your router at http://192.168.1.1/.  If you don’t know the password, it’s probably printed on a label on the router itself.
  2. In the top menu bar, click Wireless Settings.
  3. Click Advanced Security Settings on the left side menu.
  4. There will be 3 levels of security presented. Under Level 1, click the WPA2 radio button.
  5. The next screen will present you with configuration options for WPA2 security. Write down or cut/paste the Verizon Default Pre-Shared Key. If you want to keep the recommended settings, just click Apply. Otherwise, put in your own network key.  This key will be the password you use to connect to your wi-fi.
  6. Once you apply, you’ll be disconnected from your wifi.  To reconnect, you need to make Windows forget the network. On Windows 8, just right click the wireless network in the connections fly-out and click Forget Network.  Then reconnect with the pre-shared key you set up in the previous step.

Once this is done, you should be able to set up your Dropcam.  Disconnect it from your computer and re-connect it, then run the setup program again.

Note, if you did these steps you’ll have to setup the wi-fi again on all of your devices. On iPads, for example, you’ll need to disconnect from the wireless and reconnect with the pre-shared key.

This post has nothing to do with Sitecore, but I found this rather frustrating so I figured I’d share what worked with anyone who needs it.
